‘Cupid’s Cuties’ Campaign raises $3,823
Warrensburg, Mo. – The Daily Star-Journal’s February “Cupid’s Cuties” fundraising promotion collected $3,823 – 25 cents at a time – for the Survival Adult Abuse Center Inc.
Kay said Survival will use the money to finish bathroom expansion and start bedroom renovation in the domestic violence victims shelter.
“We definitely needed a bigger bathroom,” Kay said.
The center will replace a single bathroom with a double-sink, two toilets, one shower-tub combination and a shower unit.
Other groups, including Rotary and First Presbyterian Church, also have donated and provided labor toward completing the expansion.
Kay said the next push is to increase sleeping space from 15 beds to 27 bunk beds.
“The bottoms will be full-size beds and the top bunk will be a twin-size bed,” Kay said.
She said rooms will be painted and old radiators that “just take up space” will be removed to make more space in bedrooms.
“One of our critical needs is replacing the gutters, which are falling off,” she said.
Kay said she appreciates the newspaper’s community involvement.
“I got a call from The Daily Star-Journal that they wanted to do this for us,” she said. “I was shocked, couldn’t believe it.”
James said the advertising staff is excited about how well the public responded to the promotion, which involved voting with quarters for a favorite baby photo in the newspaper.
“We are thrilled with the results and once again the citizens of Warrensburg have shown how generous they are to their neighbors in need,” he said. “We just want to thank everyone who participated.”
The top votes went to Bryleigh Rodriguez, daughter of Alex and Tedra Rodriguez, with 2,796 votes; Aaron Cole Wirsig, son of Melinda Jenkins and Mason Wirsig, 1,460 votes; and Kasadee Burden, daughter of Michelle Burden, 1,112 votes.
